Fire Safety

Many humans love having a fire. Some of them would be happy to have a fire every day! But here in Colorado, we cannot do that. We must check for a fire ban daily before burning and take extra measures to help stop the spread.

I love lying by a fire! I don’t like those things called “hot dogs”! Give me some toasty marshmallows, and my dad will be unhappy all evening with my sugar rush of energy bursts! I digress…

Whether you’re just visiting or a Colorado resident, I found some tips that may help you.

Wildfire Prevention & Safety Tips

Defensible Space:
Create a 30-foot buffer around your home by clearing vegetation, pruning trees, and storing firewood away from the house.

Grab yourself a Terrier breed and they will dig that all away for you!

Campfires:
Keep campfires small, never leave them unattended, and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving.

Equipment:
Ensure spark arresters are in good working order on all portable gasoline-powered equipment.

Propane fire pits are a safe and reliable alternative.

Restrictions:
Check for fire restrictions or bans before engaging in outdoor activities, and adhere to all regulations.

Outdoor Burning:
Do not burn garbage or trash outdoors. If you must burn slash or forest debris, obtain a permit and adhere to the weather conditions.

Early Warning:
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

Escape Plan:
Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family, ensuring everyone knows two escape routes from each room.

Emergency Kit:
Prepare an emergency kit with essential items like water, food, medications, dog treats and toys, and a first-aid kit.
