Safe Soaking at High Altitude

Who loves a nice, long, hot bath – raise your paw! I certainly do! Joyful Journey is 7500 feet high. Being at a higher altitude requires some extra measures when soaking here, if you live at a lower altitude.

Whether you’re just visiting or a Colorado resident, I found some tips that may help you.

Acclimate:

  • It is recommended to give your body a couple of days to acclimatize to the higher elevation before soaking in a hot spring.
  • Ease up on cardio activities.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Follow standard Hot Spring Safety Rules:

  • Be aware of the water temperatures.
  • Soak for shorter intervals your first time, taking breaks to cool off.
  • Drinking alcohol dehydrates you and impairs judgment.
  • Drink a beverage with electrolytes. If you are feeling dizzy, GET OUT of the water and see a staff member for assistance.
  • Children should be monitored and supervised at all times by an adult.
  • Children are much more sensitive to heat. It is recommended that they not be taken into the hotter pools for safety reasons.
  • Children under four are not permitted in the hot spring pools. We provide kiddie pools to soak in.
  • Be aware of any illnesses that may affect you. Do not enter if you are sick.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the pool area (excluding Service Dogs).

Other things to consider:

  • Use sunscreen, bring hats, and items to shade in the sunlight.
  • Wear footwear for safe walking.
  • Drink more water.

These are just some of the simple guidelines to follow to make your visit the best it may be!
