Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa & Retreat Center, located in the Mystic San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, is not just another hot springs. What makes it unique is as difficult to express as trying to describe the ever-changing views that are both dynamic and serene at the same time. In this blog, we will make an effort to share our insights, events, and stories with you, so that you too, will appreciate this unique treasure.
As many hot springs’ aficionados will tell you, different minerals emerge from each hot spring and have different effects on the mind and body. I’m a Colorado native, (not a young one!) and over the years have visited many hot springs in the Colorado/New Mexico area. I lived in the Glenwood Springs area for 27-years. Anyone familiar with that part of Colorado knows there are several commercial springs and a few non-commercial hot springs within a 50-mile radius. The area is surrounded by national forests and there are four rivers flowing in the area. A starkly different landscape from the high-desert of the San Luis Valley, that I now call home, where sagebrush covers layers (upon layers!) of sand. Not a Poplar, Evergreen or Aspen (my heart-tree!) in sight. Yet this scenic valley offers three, commercial hot springs within a 50-mile radius, more if you expand the mileage. And these waters are as different from the Glenwood waters, as is the landscape.
The healing waters at Joyful Journey are the main draw to this quiet oasis that also provides a variety of lodging, retreat centers, and spa treatments. I tell people the lithium is better than vino and will make them just as loopy. Our lost and found is full of items left behind by tranquil visitors. Many times, I’ve heard the grumbling of an individual arriving from some far-off city, checking-in and raising their voice to complain about this or that. Then I hear that same individual walk in after soaking, release a deep “Ahhh” from their chest and an apology to the front desk from their lips. The water is that good. Plus, Joyful Journey is one of the few (if not the only!) hot springs that empties, cleans, and refills its waters every. single. day.
